Mai W. Ibrahim
is a researcher of digital cultures.
About
I am an Assistant Professor in the department of Communication at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Previously, I was a Sessional Instructor at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, and a Postdoctoral Visitor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at York University in Toronto, where I researched toxicity in video games. I completed my PhD in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, U.S.
My research examines how virtual reality (VR) spaces actively reorganize sensation, embodiment, and subjectivity, rather than simply representing experience. I’m particularly interested in how this reorganization of embodied experience becomes entangled with platform capitalism, where affective and bodily responses can be captured and transformed into data and economic value.
More broadly, my research engages a range of emerging media and technologies, including brain-computer interfaces, social media, and video games, to examine how technological systems reshape embodied experience and mediate our relationships with ourselves and the world around us.
